Heavy Rain Coming in Perth? Stormwater Checks for Your Home

When Perth has wet weather on the way, small stormwater problems can show up quickly: blocked drains, overflowing soakwells, water pooling against paving, and runoff heading where it should not.

What to check before or during heavy rain

  • Downpipes: make sure roof water is being directed into proper drainage, not straight onto paving, garden beds or against the house.
  • Drain grates and pits: clear leaves, sand and debris so water can enter the system instead of backing up.
  • Pooling water: note where water sits after rain, especially near alfresco areas, garages, paths, retaining walls and low spots.
  • Soakwells: watch for overflow, slow draining, gurgling or water coming back through grates.
  • Paving and landscaping: new paving, patios, artificial lawn or garden changes can alter natural falls and push water toward the wrong area.

Common signs the stormwater system needs attention

If water is pooling for long periods, running toward the home, overflowing from pits, or repeatedly flooding the same section of yard, the system may be blocked, undersized, damaged or no longer suitable for the property.

Photos make quoting easier

If you need help, take photos during or soon after rain. Useful photos include the pooling water, nearby downpipes, drainage grates, paving levels, access points and the wider area. This helps narrow down whether the likely fix is cleaning, pipework, pits, extra soakwell capacity, subsoil drainage or a broader stormwater upgrade.

Why timing matters

Wet weather is often when stormwater problems become obvious. Getting issues checked early can help avoid repeated flooding through the rest of the rainy period.
